Causes of Bronchitis

⊆ December 23rd, 2008 by admin | ˜ No Comments »

Bronchitis is as a result of inflammation of the medium sized airways also known as bronchi. The symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath and wheezing. The last two symptoms are as a result of blocking of the airways by mucous. The treatment depends on the cause of bronchitis. These include bacteria and viral pathogens. These are the main causes. Other causes are smoking and air pollution.

The viruses include influenza, adenoviridae and syncytial virus. Most causes of bronchitis are viruses. These will usually disappear on their own without any medication. The ones caused by bacteria pathogens need to be treated using antibiotics. Bronchitis caused by smoking can not be fully treated by drugs. One has to stop smoking. The tar smoked in builds up in the inside walls of the lungs. This causes an irritation that can lead to bronchitis

Over the counter antihistamines are discouraged. The antihistamines thicken mucous making it difficult to expel from the lungs. Treatment of bronchitis can include expectorant cough syrup. This expels harmful bacteria from the lungs. The syrup should not be mixed with the antihistamines as this renders it powerless.

Causes of bronchitis should be well diagnosed. This will make its recurrence difficult. It will also ensure that the correct treatment is administered. If the symptoms last for more than a month, a doctor should be consulted again to rule out any other problems.
