Cold Sore On Your Lip

When you have that tingly feeling on your lip, then you know the dreaded cold sore is on the way. This infection appears on the lip or on the nose. It is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus type I (HSV-I). You normally get the virus during the first five years of your life. Remember that aunt of yours who was smothering you with kisses? She might have been the one carrying the virus and gave it to you.

The virus remains in the nerve cell somewhere near your neck until it is triggered by either stress, fatigue, hormonal changes in women, eating certain foods, exposure to excessive sunlight etc. It then forms a blister which bursts and then heals leaving no scar within 14 days.

Cold sore on your lip can be very embarrassing and unpleasant. Though there is no known cure for it, you can manage it pretty well. You can apply petroleum jelly on the sore to make it heal faster by not cracking. Applying ice wrapped in a clean cloth will help ease the pain and inflammation on the lip. You can use sunscreen on your lips when going out in to direct sunlight to protect your lips. You can also use a lip stick that has sunscreen.

Cold sore lip is highly contagious and you should as much as possible try to keep it to yourself. You can conveniently do this by not kissing those you love, not sharing your utensils, lip balm and facial towels. It is also very important to know what triggers your cold sore so as to avoid it. Eating a healthy diet will make sure that your immune system is in good condition.
