Mouth Sores, How Do You Know You Have Them?
They are annoying and unpleasant. They keep coming back just when you thought that you had finally got rid of them. Mouth sores or canker sores are caused by a viral or bacterial infection. They infect the soft loose tissue of the mouth such as, chick, inner lip, tongue, soft palate or floor of the mouth. They are less than half a diameter. The ulcer begin as a small oval or round reddish blister that usually bursts within a day. The ruptured sore is usually covered by a white or yellow membrane and edged by a red border. Luckily, they are not contagious.
What causes mouth sores? They may be caused by a number of things that include the following; loose dentures in your mouth, orthodontic wire, a sharp edge from a broken tooth or filling. Stress is another major trigger, acidic foods, specific foods for the individual, trauma, toothpaste containing the additive sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). Lack of vitamin B12 and iron can cause this infection too.
There is no cure for this infection, however, laser treatment is said to be most effective giving pain relief and healing within 24-72 hours. Avoid known triggers such as using toothpaste that does not have sodium lauryl sulphate will go along way in preventing a recurrence. Knowing what foods gives you an allergy will also greatly help you in keeping this infection in check.
Though mouth sores are not contagious it is advisable to wash your hands after touching the infected area. Having a good immune system will make sure that you keep clear of opportunistic infections and should you get one, healing is very fast.
